Quality standards, efficacy and technical proficiency are the key objectives for China as it gears up to meet the needs of the global nutrition market. This was the conclusion at the first-ever Nutracon China, held in Beijing last December.

The country’s role in the global nutrition market was discussed indepth, along with the latest regulatory developments. The director general of the State Food and Drug Administration’s (SFDA) Center for Health Food Evaluation, Jiansheng Huang, said his agency’s goal was to create standards, improve the technical evaluation of products and reach out to new experts to help with efficacy evaluation.

Xiaoyu Xie, deputy director of the SFDA’s Department of Drug Registration, explained the recent regulatory changes, in particular the new rules for registration of healthy foods. Speaking in a wider international context, Simon Pettman, executive director of the International Alliance of Dietary Supplements Associations, noted that imports into the EU from China would be held to a high standard.

The conference, designed for high-level executives, drew an audience of 150, including government regulators, company executives and industry leaders from China, Japan, Korea, Europe and the United States.

“Nutracon provided a unique insight into the growth potential of the Chinese market and the importance of the emerging Chinese regulatory system for dietary supplements and traditional medicines worldwide,” Pettman said.

The conference was produced by New Hope Natural Media, in partnership with the SFDA. Sponsors included: Amway China, IADSA, Shanghai Pharmaceuticals, Capsugel, Unigen, ADM, Cargill, Cognis and NSF. Visit www.nutraconchina.com for more information.

Nutracon China 2005 is slated to be held in Shanghai.
