Monitoring system tests homogeneity
The Full Integrated NIR System promises to be the first real-time monitor of blend homogeneity and end-point determination during powder-blending operations. The system, by LB Bohle, based in Pennsylvania and Germany, is fully closed and eliminates physical sampling requirements. It also prevents contact with potent products during testing.

Dual-coated bacteria
Cell Bio Tech, a global bio-venture company, has developed a new generation of probiotics, called DuoLac, that has solved some of the most pressing problems of adding micro-organisms to foods. A patented special dual-coating keeps the bacteria alive and ensures their timely release in the intestines, the company reports. DuoLac is slated to be launched in a range of food supplements for sale in the UK.

Spirig Advanced Tech in Massachusetts has created self-adhesive Excess Temperature Alarm labels. Applied to any surface that needs monitoring, these Jumbo-CelsiDot labels can be easily read from a remote location. They are available in 40 different levels within the range of +40oC to +260oC. They are sold in packages of 24 labels or rolls of 1,200 labels.

Zipper-capable packaging machine

New range of oxygen-eaters
Multisorb Technologies, based in New York, has introduced a new FreshCard oxygen absorber to preserve the freshness and quality of packaged foods and extend shelf life. The FreshCard reduces and maintains the oxygen content in packaging to below 0.01 per cent, which is significantly lower than traditional vacuum, back or gas flushing. FreshCard protects packaged foods from spoilage, mold growth and other damage. It also reduces or eliminates the need for food additives and preservatives. It ranges in size from 2-by-2 inches to 4-by-4 inches, and is available in spools or fan-folded, for automatic dispensing.
