Global Reporting Initiative seeks to set standards for a 'green' accounting framework

Danisco, Bunge, Nestlé, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters and Tyson Foods have demonstrated their growing green credentials by joining a working group established by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), a body that promotes corporate environmental sustainability. GRI said membership of the working group aims to "enable companies and stakeholders to better measure and communicate sustainability progress."

The group is set to meet in Brazil in early 2008 to develop guidelines.

"Bunge has operations in different stages of the food-supply chain, from fields to consumers' tables," said Bunge's corporate communications director, Adalgiso Telles.

"In Brazil we work with many partners on increasing sustainability performance because we know that's a good way to improve business as a whole."

The group says consumers are demanding to be provided with meaningful information about how foods and beverages are produced, and producers need to respond to those demands.

"This cannot be reduced to a simplistic 'carbon label,' but requires a sound understanding of all significant sustainability aspects, including water, nutrition, and health and wellness as a basis to create shared value for society," said Nestlé's safety, health and environment vice president Claus Conzelmann.
