"We need to do with supplements what we do with drugs, which is to test them out. Ten years ago the academic community scoffed at the idea of omega-3 fish oils."

— Harry Preuss, Georgetown University researcher and author of The Natural Fat-Loss Pharmacy"

The final report of a study commissioned by the Dietary Supplement Education Alliance shows that over the next five years, appropriate use of certain dietary supplements could both improve the health of key populations, and save more than $24 billion in healthcare costs. Key findings of the study include:

  • Calcium with vitamin D could save $16.1 billion by avoiding hospital care for hip fractures.
  • Folic acid could save $1.4 billion by preventing neural tube defects.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids could save more than $3.2 billion by reducing the occurrence of coronary heart disease in those over 65.

"Instead of consuming four billion gallons (15 billion litres) of water a year in individual-sized bottles, we need to start thinking about what all those bottles are doing to the planet's health."
