Schouten USA Inc., of Minneapolis, Minnesota, along with the other health divisions of The Royal Schouten Group of The Netherlands, Giessen, NV, are now united under the new name Acatris. The companies have merged their capabilities to create a new organisation under the existing leadership in the food and health industries. Acatris Holding B.V., the business headquarters, will remain in Giessen, NV.
Norwegian research and development company, Natural ASA, has given Germany-based Cognis world-wide license to manufacture and market Natural's products and technology, which include dietary supplements, functional foods and personal care products. Natural's products include the popular weight-control supplement, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
The ORAFTI Group of Belgium, a subsidiary of Raffinerie Tirlemontoise, which produces chicory-based ingredients and rice starch, has named Paul Coussement chief financial officer. Coussement, a food technology engineer and formerly sales and marketing director of ORAFTI Active Food Ingredients for seven years, is one of the company's founders. ORAFTI is part of the Südzucker Group, the European sugar producer.
New findings in a study funded by Italy-based Rhodia reveal that phosphorus in combination with calcium is essential for people undergoing bone-building therapy. In addition to the 1,000 to 1,500mg/day of calcium a patient needs to slow bone loss or to support treatment-induced bone gain, 500mg phosphorus should be added for maximum bone development because phosphate makes up more than half the mass of bone mineral. The study was conducted at Creighton University of Omaha, Nebraska, and presented at the National Osteoporosis Foundation International Symposium in March.
Following an independent-panel evaluation, Roche Vitamins' lycopene has received GRAS approval. Roche lycopene is available in both water-dispersible and oil-soluble forms and is well suited for nutrition bars, fruit/milk drinks and juices, salad dressings, yoghurts and soups, among other foods and beverages.
